I’ll throw my hat into the ring, because I agree with John here on something that I had actually started to think about yesterday when I saw the pictures of the Deep Sea. I don’t wear a suit every day, but I wear one often enough, and I wonder how the Deep Sea would look. My Sea-Dweller goes with literally, everything I own, casual, business casual, formal, you name it…I can wear it with any suit. From pictures alone, my initial assessment is that, although I REALLY like the Deep Sea, and would eventually like to have one, quite frankly, I’m just not seeing it with a suit. Maybe certain combinations, but I just can’t make it work in my head with alot of the formal clothes that are in my closet. To many with expendable income, that may not make a difference, but to someone like me, who’s watch purchases will most likely be few and far between for awhile (unfortunately), I don’t see this as a practical addition to the collection. I still really like it, don’t get me wrong…just not THAT much…not right now, anyway.

I agree 100% the DeepSea isn’t going to work with a suit, unless you’re Hulk Hogan or some similar size.. Although, there’s many people that wear the Breitling Super Avenger with a suit (its 48mm) and others will say ANY dive watch shouldn’t be worn with a suit (like a sub or sea-dweller). Though I don’t agree with that though either…

But, I guess Rolex is thinking the current Sea-Dweller isn’t needed as the Sub is ‘close enough’ in design. You got the date with the cyclops or the no-date without. Aside from the thickness & cyclops they really are the same watch. So maybe they’re thinking if they had the DeepSea, SD & Sub they wouldn’t be in any better position than just having the Sub & DeepSea. Maybe they’re thinking most people who would have preferred the SD would just get the sub in the absence of the SD.. Absolutely no factual basis behind that or saying it’s right or wrong, just throwing out my thoughts….

Stopped in at my favorite local AD today as the manager had told me he had the platinum ice-blue Day Date in stock. Of course, I had to stop in & try it on…

While a Day Date (currently) does not appeal to me simply because a 36mm watch is too small on my wrist, how often will I have the chance to put almost $50,000 on my wrist. Plus, I’ve been anxious to see that dial in person.

So, first impression is it’s far less blue in person. It really is about the color of blue ice, it has a transparency about it. Depending on how you look at it it’s blueish-silver to almost a clear-steel (if that makes any sense). It has just a slight hint of blue. I really liked it….

The pictures of it look very nice, but I’ve always thought they’re a bit too blue for everyday wear. But not so in person… The subtleness of the blue is so understated it’s incredibly gorgeous.

Of course the other thing you immediately notice is the weight of the watch. I had the Steel YM with platinum dial with me & that things a lightweight compared to this Day Date. Very nice weight for such a small watch.

And I just loved the presidents bracelet. The whole package is just an A+, save the size. I really wish & hope Rolex will eventually come out with a 40mm DD or DJ. Oh well.. As long as they don’t it’s one less watch for me to really want…

Anyways, just thought I’d share the experience… It was just so amazing that the dial is so different in real life than what we see in print. While very nice in print you really do have to see it in person to really appreciate what the color is…

HOWEVER, I’ll go on a limb and say with everything we’re disusing in the other threads on new Submariner, Sea Dweller, a new DeepSea I’ll bet we’re all wrong.

We had the same amount of rumors on what the watch was with the new bezel on the website last year & I don’t recall anyone calling it as a new Regatta watch (YachtMaster II). So - my prediction is we’re all wrong and we’re gonna be going "ooooohhhhhh" or "ewwwwwwww" come Thursday morning…

But - that doesn’t make the guessing & wondering any less fun!!!!

Well, the weather here was horrible today, so took the little one to the mall to stroller around some. Of course, being at the mall, I had to do some window watch shopping…. Luckily it was the mall, a place I’d never buy a watch at as the prices are way too much compared to the other AD’s…

However, in one of the Rolex dealers I picked up 2 "new" (well, maybe not so new) rumors about new models… The salesman said the info is ’straight from the Rolex rep who is right there with what’s happening in the Rolex corporate offices & would know everything about the new models coming out" (yes - I kept a straight face as he told me this! ).. Anyways, the story was:

1) a new 42mm Sea-Dweller (and the 40mm will stay in the line-up)
2) A 40mm Day-Date

Ok, so nothing earth shattering. I wouldn’t be surprised by either, and the thickness of the SD over the Sub would definitely fit a 42mm very well, maybe even better than a 40mm size. IMO a 42mm SD, new solid center bracelet links (keeping it brushed), new clasp, maxi dial & a ceramic bezel would be a killer combo for the SD. It may even push me to sell my Sub & get one.. But, we’ll see. One good thing is if it’s true, there won’t be any of this waiting 2 years for it to go thru the 18K’s, then TT’s then SS. It would of course only be avail in SS… And, given the substantial price increase the SD had over the Sub, it would make sense…

Anyways, we’ll know in 5 days……. I’ll bet Hannes will have a Basel ‘08 report online before all of us in the USA even get our first cup of coffee Friday AM…

What you all think on those 2? I know they’re Rolex rumors which are about as reliable as a watch with no hands - but you gotta admit, it’s a lot of fun to talk about them….
